Our students go on to work as counselors in public and private schools; colleges and universities; community-based social service agencies; and private practice. The UAB Community Counseling Clinic provides individual and group counseling services to residents of Jefferson County. The clinic is also a training site for graduate counseling students fulfilling practicum and internship clinical requirements. The 63 semester hour program School Counseling program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) and has “approved” status with the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals (American Counseling Association, 2010). The Counselor Education Program will train professional counselors who serve the mental health needs of the citizens of Georgia and the nation. The CACREP accredited College Counseling and Student Affairs specialty area is for professionals who will work in student affairs offices, including career centers, residential life, and college counseling programs.
