If you don’t know where to get treatment, start by contacting your primary care provider. Before they turn to a health care professional, many people may turn to community and faith leaders when facing mental health problems or traumatic events. The federal government and states also fund behavioral health care innovations through grants. At the federal level, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), with a $6.4 billion discretionary budget in 2022, is a major grantmaker.
Research shows that people who are treated for depression or suicidal thoughts (whether through therapy or medication) are far less likely to think about or attempt suicide. Sometimes, difficulty with money or other practical issues is linked to suicidal ideation.
General practitioners and other agents within the health sector help provide counselling on work and workplace related issues in parallel to treatment. In federal states, they are often the responsibility of different levels of government. In the U.S., employment policy is a state affair, while health policy falls largely under the national domain. Countries are trying to improve cooperation across sectors by gathering people around the table or by cross-funding of services across sectors but the administrative and procedural costs are very high and the effect often limited. Therapy, too, is not a cure-all for whatever you’re going through, but it can be an effective tool in getting you to a place where you can better manage your mental health. Outdoor enthusiasts have long touted the health benefits of being in nature, both physical and mental.
Help for Mental Illnesses
SAMHSA’s mission is to lead public health and service delivery efforts that promote mental health, prevent substance misuse, and provide treatments and supports to foster recovery while ensuring equitable access and better outcomes. Friends and family members can make all the difference in a person’s recovery process. Learn how to support your friends and loved ones as they look for help with their mental health problems. Poor access to behavioral health services is a serious obstacle to treatment. In some areas of the U.S., services are simply not available or affordable to the people who need them. Empathizing with other people’s struggles can make mental health less mysterious. It helps kids grasp that uncomfortable emotions are common and that there’s nothing wrong with them if they run into challenges, too.
How to Improve Mental Health
Behavioral health refers generally to the promotion of mental well-being and the prevention and treatment of mental health and substance use concerns. An individual’s level of behavioral health can fall anywhere on the spectrum from illness to positive mental well-being, and it can vary over the course of a lifetime. According to Kayiteshonga, prior to 2018, there was limited research studying the prevalence of mental disorders in few areas and specific categories of the Rwandan population, she said. Yet “good policies and good health strategies are those based on evidence,” Kayiteshonga explained. So, it’s important to seek support for yourself if your teen has a mental illness. If your healthcare provider recommends further assessment, your teen may be referred to a mental health professional. A mental health professional, such as a psychologist or licensed clinical social worker, may interview you and your teen to gather more information.
In addition, adolescents and young adults have been disproportionately affected compared to younger children and older adults12,15,29,40. This may be the result of unfavorable behavioral and social changes (for example, school closure periods42) during a crucial development phase where social interactions outside the family context are pivotal. Alarmingly, even though suicide rates did not seem to increase at the population level, studies in China43 and Japan44 indicated significant increases in suicide rates in children and adolescents. In 2020, less than half of adults and youth with mental health conditions and less than 10 percent with substance use disorders got treatment over the course of the year. As in other areas of health care, there are striking racial disparities in access to behavioral health care. While access to services has improved steadily for white people over the past decade, there has often been less improvement in access for people of color, further widening racial disparities.
You may also want to explore options for telehealth treatment for your child. The demand for telehealth therapy appointments exploded during the pandemic, and it’s a convenient, effective option for children and teens. Awareness of your mental state also includes determining your emotional and social well-being.

The process of diagnosing a mental illness usually starts with the patient consulting a healthcare professional.5 This can be a doctor in a clinic or general hospital, a psychiatrist, or another mental health specialist. Just talking about mental health issues, even to one person, helps bust stigma and you may be surprised to find that you’re actually helping others.
People with mental health conditions are more likely to smoke than those who do not have mental health conditions. Among smokers, people with mental health conditions are more likely to smoke a greater number of cigarettes.
